As disciples answering God’s call to follow Him (Matthew 19:21) and be a witness to others, I invite you to join me in prayer each day for the catechists, families, and those we are called to serve. As we pray we invite the Holy Spirit to fill us with the knowledge and experience to continue Jesus’ work and pass-on the Good News. As disciples (catechists) we are called to provide an opportunity to be a witness of discipleship through a loving experience, praying, forgiving and serving.
The coming year offers an exciting opportunity as Pope Benedict XVI declares this next year as the “Year of Faith”. This will be a great experience that reminds us of our path of discipleship, sharing about who we are as missionaries, our call to vocation as a priest, religious, catechist, married -- and as lay ministers.
As a catechist, how do we do this in the hour-and-a-half that we have the children? The answer is simply by following Jesus’ teachings. By following Jesus’ example we have the opportunity to encourage a strong spiritual life in those we encounter. As they encountering Jesus they will want to pray and be part of the church community.
In Matthew 4:18-22; Mark 1:16; Luke 5:1-11; John 1:35-51; it speaks of how Jesus gathered his followers and taught them by his word and example, preparing them to share in his mission to proclaim the Good News about the Kingdom of God. As we share in his mission we are reaching out to the educated, uneducated, single and married, poor and wealthy, young and old, women and men, those that know God and those that are seeking Him. As catechist we are called to be an example of God’s unconditional love for all of His people.
So as we prepare for the “Year of Faith” let us ask Our Father to send His Holy Spirit to guide us, to teach us, and to give us a spirit of love and acceptance that will reflect the unconditional love of our Lord Jesus Christ.
