On October 21, 2012, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI is scheduled to canonize Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, thus making her the first U.S. Native American saint of the Church. This special occasion and her enrollment among the elect in heaven are sure to bring many graces upon our Church, Native peoples everywhere, and the work of the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions.
Commencing tomorrow, July 14, Blessed Kateri's feast day, I invite you to join me in a special novena in her honor. We will pray for our intentions, the intentions of our loved ones, and for the success of the canonization. On the reverse of this letter you will find the novena prayers to be used between July 14 and July 22. If you wish, you may also submit your intentions for this special novena to the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions and they will be joined with others' intentions.
Your generosity to the Bureau through the years has been most welcome. With your gifts we have been able to continue and increase our evangelization programs among Native peoples and further the work of the Bureau itself.
If you can find it in your heart to help us as we continue to prepare for the canonization, a donation would be most welcome. While many of the costs associated with the canonization itself are covered, there are other costs that the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions must assume. Any gift you can make at this time would be most welcome. Please visit us on our website at www.blackandindianmission.org to donate.
I trust that the novena will be a time of great spiritual rewards for you. As we approach the date of Blessed Kateri's canonization, may she continue to pour out her grace upon you through our Lord Jesus Christ, whom she loved and served.
In Christ through the prayerful intercession of Blessed Kateri, I am,
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Reverend W. Carroll Paysse
