The Diocese of Fresno welcomes Sr. Invención Canas, RAD who was recently appointed by Bishop Ochoa as the new part-time Vicar for Women Religious for the Diocese of Fresno.
Sr. Invención entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Love of God because she wanted to be a teacher and viewed her vocation as a calling not as a profession. After her formation years, she professed her vows and was sent to Cuba for five years. Unfortunately, Fidel Castro began his political overthrow of the government and overtook all of their 13 schools. The Order then opened other schools in Puerto Rico, the United States including California.
Sr. Invención came to California in 1960 and attended Mount St. Mary’s College, Immaculate Heart College and Fresno State University, where she graduated with a Masters in education along with the California credentials. She has served as a Catholic school principal for 42 years at St. Martha’s school in La Puente, Sacred Heart School in Fresno, St. John the Baptist in Baldwin Park and St. Anne’s in Porterville.
Sr. Invención, was the Superior for many years and has been appointed and served as the Regional Superior for the Sisters in California. She has made a couple of headlines in the “Tidings”. In 2005 she was nominated as the “Outstanding Women of The Year” by Mayor, Manuel Lozano of San Gabriel Valley.
Most recently, Sr. Invención has been involved with the Spanish Cursillo in the Diocese of Fresno from 1985 to 1989 and from 2007 to present.
She especially noted that “I am proud to say that I have dedicated my life to the Christian Education of the youth for many years. I feel I have planted a lot of seeds in the souls of thousands of students and I have never doubted that sooner or later these seeds will sprout and grow”. In the spirit of her ministry, our new Vicar for Women Religious mentioned that: “I have tried all my life to live up to the motto that the Venerable Fr. Jerónio Usera, Founder of the Sisters of the Love of God left us. “The Charity of Christ Urges Us.”
Our prayers are with Sr. Invención as we welcome, congratulate and thank her for graciously accepting the role to serve the Diocese as our new Vicar for Women Religious.
