Our Year of Mercy confessions on Friday, February 26, were a smashing success. It was beyond anyone’s expectations or dreams. Rev. Kris Sorenson, Pastor of California City’s Our Lady of Lourdes Parish and Vicar of the High Desert Vicariate, was there most of the day to deal with the overflow, while the other priests fulfilled their shifts. The line of penitents did not let up from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 midnight. Father Sorensen personally spent nine hours in the confessional dealing with the excess. Considering the (geographical) logistics of the vicariate (Bishop, California City, Lone Pine, Ridgecrest, and Rosamond) he was floored by this. And many of these people are returning Catholics.
