Quick Catechesis: Explaining All Saint’s Day to our Students

The 1st of November is All Saints' Day. We remember the saints and allow the memory of their faith to spur us into deeper worship and greater service to the Lord. As catechists, focusing on simple facts and specific points to enrich this celebration for the students in our catechism programs can be reflected through simple explanations that allow them to grasp just how special the saints and their lives were in providing an example of a faithfulness to our Lord in how we live our lives.

We can share with them how in their lives some saints were always very good, yet others had not behaved very well, but in the end, they realized the love of God in their lives and how much He loved them as they were and decided to follow Him. Some lived with the poor, others were rich and sold everything to follow Him. Some were wise, others very simple, but they all had something in common, they had realized that there is nothing as important as the love of God.

We can remind our students that all of us are called to sainthood and to live holy lives, and for that, God gives us the gift of faith. It is His gift when we are baptized, but we must also want to strive for sainthood.

Incorporating a familiar genre in our lessons allows our students to better connect with what we are teaching. For example, as we did in this year’s Youth Day at the Visalia Convention Center, the theme was superheroes. Using the example of superheroes that our students may have seen at the movies or on television, we can remind them that the gift of faith is bigger than all the superpowers of their favorite heroes. Faith is not given to us so we can have strong muscles, or for being able to fly, or seeing through walls, or for hitting anybody. To be holy is to want to follow Jesus, to act like him, to do good like him, to love like him.

Students already realize that superheroes are characters that have superpowers and that they have fun with and sometimes might pretend to be while playing. We can share with our students that even though the saints did not have superpowers, they were those that were faithful to their vocation, that the gift of faith they received was used for the betterment of themselves and those they could help. And to maintain ourselves strong in our faith we can finally share with them simple steps that they can take to do this. Such as leading a prayerful life, attending Mass and receiving communion, receiving reconciliation continuously, trusting and maintaining ourselves in the Grace of God, listening to God's Word, and proclaiming the Word of God.

My brother and sister catechists, the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, the apostles, martyrs, and saints all await our triumph, they are attentive to our struggles and needs, they do not forget us. We too can be holy, but we must strive to do what our Lord and Savior taught us. To love God and neighbor as God loves us. May this upcoming All Saint’s Day be a blessed and festive celebration for the students in your programs and your parish community.

Catequesis a la rápides: Explicando el día de Todos los Santos a nuestros alumnos

El 1 de noviembre es el Día de Todos los Santos. Recordamos a los santos y permitimos que el recuerdo de su fe nos impulse a una adoración más profunda y a un mayor servicio al Señor. Como catequistas, enfocarse en hechos simples y puntos específicos para enriquecer esta celebración para los estudiantes en nuestros programas de catecismo puede reflejarse a través de explicaciones simples que les permitan comprender lo especial que fueron los santos y sus vidas al proporcionar un ejemplo de fidelidad a nuestro Señor en la forma en que vivimos nuestras vidas.

Podemos compartir con ellos cómo en sus vidas algunos santos siempre fueron muy buenos, sin embargo, otros no se habían portado muy bien, pero al final, se dieron cuenta del amor de Dios en sus vidas y cuánto los amaba tal como eran y decidieron seguirlo. Algunos vivían con los pobres, otros eran ricos y vendían todo para seguirlo. Algunos eran sabios, otros muy sencillos, pero todos tenían algo en común, se habían dado cuenta de que no hay nada tan importante como el amor de Dios.

Podemos recordarles a nuestros estudiantes que todos estamos llamados a la santidad y a vivir vidas santas, y por eso, Dios nos da el don de la fe. Es Su regalo cuando somos bautizados, pero también debemos querer esforzarnos por la santidad.

Incorporar un género familiar en nuestras lecciones permite a nuestros estudiantes conectarse mejor con lo que estamos enseñando. Por ejemplo, como hicimos en el Día de Juvenil de este año en el Centro de Convenciones en Visalia, el tema fue superhéroes. Usando el ejemplo de los superhéroes que nuestros estudiantes pueden haber visto en el cine o en la televisión, podemos recordarles que el don de la fe es más grande que todos los superpoderes de sus héroes favoritos. La fe no se nos da para que podamos tener músculos fuertes, o para poder volar, o ver a través de las paredes, o para golpear a alguien. Ser santo es querer seguir a Jesús, actuar como él, hacer el bien como él, amar como él.

Los estudiantes ya se dan cuenta de que los superhéroes son personajes que tienen superpoderes y con los que se divierten y, a veces, pueden fingir serlo mientras juegan. Podemos compartir con nuestros alumnos que a pesar de que los santos no tenían superpoderes, eran aquellos que eran fieles a su vocación, que el don de la fe que recibían lo usaban para el mejoramiento de sí mismos y de aquellos a quienes podían ayudar. Y para mantenernos fuertes en nuestra fe, finalmente podemos compartir con ellos pasos sencillos que pueden tomar para hacer esto. Como llevar una vida de oración, asistir a Misa y recibir la comunión, recibir la reconciliación continuamente, confiar y mantenernos en la Gracia de Dios, escuchar la Palabra de Dios y proclamar la Palabra de Dios.

Mis hermanos y hermanas catequistas, la Santísima Virgen María, San José, los apóstoles, los mártires y los santos, todos esperan nuestro triunfo, están atentos a nuestras luchas y necesidades, no se olvidan de nosotros. Nosotros también podemos ser santos, pero debemos esforzarnos por hacer lo que nuestro Señor y Salvador nos enseñó. Amar a Dios y al prójimo como Dios nos ama. Que este próximo Día de Todos los Santos sea una bendita celebración festiva para los estudiantes de sus programas y su comunidad parroquial.
