Celebrating World Marriage Day

By Rose M. Hernandez, Office of Formation and Evangelization

Every February a special celebration is held for World Marriage Day.  With the pandemic this year, the traditional Anniversary Mass was not possible, and instead a virtual celebration was presented.  Couples submitted their marriage information and pictures and viewed a special message of congratulations from Bishop Joseph Brennan.  The video link is provided on our website, at https://dioceseoffresno.org/office-of-formation-and-evangelization/family-life/.

The United States Bishops provided for our National celebration the theme, “To Have, To Hold, To Honor,” providing some resources for parishes and for couples to use in their homes.  There are links to podcasts, marriage tips, and other resources available for free at https://www.foryourmarriage.org/celebrate-national-marriage-week/.

In this Year of St. Joseph, there is an added dimension to the celebration of the Sacrament of Matrimony.  We are invited to reflect and pray on the wonderful example of St. Joseph as guardian, as well as the example of the Holy Spouses, Mary and Joseph.

A beautiful way to celebrate with your family is to pray the Holy Spouses rosary.  This is a beautiful rosary for the family to pray together, reflecting on the role of both Mary and Joseph not only as the parents of the Christ Child, but as a married couple who support one another with devotion and humility.  Leaflets with the entire rosary are available in English and Spanish at https://dioceseoffresno.org/year-of-st-joseph/.

We bless all married couples as we pray:  May Mary and Joseph, the Holy Spouses, guard and protect you always.  Amen.
