In accordance with our Catholic tradition to inaugurate the Jubilee year, Pope Francis will open the Holy Door of the Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican on the December 24th, 2024.
Diocesan Inauguration Mass
Bishop Brennan invites the Faithful to join him for a procession and celebration of the Holy Mass on December 29th, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at St. John's Cathedral.
The Procession will begin at 3:00 p.m. on the corner of Mariposa St. and U St (near Starbucks). Priests who wish to concelebrate are asked to bring an alb and a white stole.
The Holy Father decreed that on Sunday, December 29th, 2024, in every Cathedral, diocesan bishops are to celebrate Holy Mass as the solemn opening of the Jubilee Year. As part of the opening of the Jubilee Year celebration in every diocese, the Holy Father also encouraged a procession to the Cathedral church; the procession symbolizes the journey of hope that, illumined by the word of God, unites the faithful [6]. These events are envisioned for the Cathedral (and Co-Cathedrals) only. A holy door is not envisioned, neither at the Cathedral nor at designated parishes during this Jubilee Year, but a Cross, instead, as the symbol of our hope.
What is the Jubilee Year?
On May 9, 2024, Pope Francis released a Papal Bull of Indiction which formally announced the Jubilee Year of Hope. The document was entitled: Spes non condfundit – “Hope does not disappoint” (Rom 5:5). In it, Pope Francis explains the reasons for this theme of the Jubilee Year: “Hope is … the central message of the coming Jubilee that, in accordance with an ancient tradition, the Pope proclaims every twenty-five years.... For everyone, may the Jubilee be a moment of genuine, personal encounter with the Lord Jesus, the “door” (cf. Jn 10:7.9) of our salvation, whom the Church is charged to proclaim always, everywhere and to all as ‘our hope’ (1 Tim 1:1)” [Spes non confundit, 1].
The Holy Year will conclude on Sunday, December 28 December 2025; in the course of the year, every effort should be made to enable the People of God to participate fully in its proclamation of hope in God’s grace and in the signs that attest to its efficacy” [Spes non confundit, 6].
The Jubilee Year of Hope will conclude with the closing of the Holy Door in Saint Peter’s Basilica on January 6th, 2026, the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. During the Holy Year, may the light of Christian hope illumine every man and woman, as a message of God’s love addressed to all! And may the Church bear faithful witness to this message in every part of the world! [Spes non confundit, 6].
