Catechetical Ministries in Motion: St. Mary, Sanger

About two weeks ago I was invited to St. Mary’s in Sanger to share a talk with youth altar servers. I wanted to thank Fr. Javier Flores and Leonel and Magda Valdovinos for the invitation, setting up the event and their warm hospitality. And of course, the rest of the parish staff and volunteers that were involved along with the children and youth in attendance.

When Leonel and Magda first approached me with the possibility of sharing this type of talk, I was very intrigued on what the possibility might be as to how to approach it. Even though I have experience training adult and youth altar servers I had never composed something specific for youth altar servers that would address the potential challenges youth and children might face either through social or cultural situations. So, in composing my talks and topics I took into consideration of course practical guidance in the service of this ministry and Liturgical elements, but I also wanted to include the vocational aspect of this ministry and how as youth and children they can begin to not only answer the Lord’s call at even a young age but to be able to begin to discern and possibly discover their vocations.

Even as children and youth the Lord calls us to serve. Serving God as an altar server is a wonderful way for youth and children to grow in faith as well as in responsibility, friendship, and other virtues. Faith is transmitted by spending time in God’s company and in His service through small daily actions. Many factors play a role, but there is a precious activity that is within the reach of all children and youth, and which combines these aspects, through the ministry of altar servers.

The fact is, there’s nothing more satisfying for our soul, even for that of children and youth, than to serve without expecting anything in return. And our joy grows even greater when it’s a matter of serving God himself at the altar. Being an altar server has the potential to teach youth and children the order of the Liturgy and its care and importance. They can learn to serve with love and to perform the smallest details beautifully. This ministry can also teach them how to be responsible and punctual. From an early age, they can obtain a good sense of service and commitment to the Holy Mass. Being an altar server has the potential to foster companionship along with others of their same or similar age and to share and distribute tasks and teach and learn from each other. And of course, because of a more direct participation in the Holy Mass, to improve the possibility of growing in prayer, participation, and spiritual dedication and to love to revere and praise God more fully.

The goal of whatever we teach young altar servers should always be that to serve in the Sanctuary of the Lord’s house is a great religious privilege. To instruct them on the manner of observing the rites and ceremonies of the Church according to the Liturgy and encouraging them to understand the meaning and the purpose of the vocation of the ministry in which they take part and the service they provide the community of the faithful. To embrace their service through love and devotion. To embrace and overcome the challenges that might be faced through social issues and personal obstacles with the help of God’s grace and in faith.

May our youth altar servers follow the example of Jesus, who did not hesitate to place himself at the whole of humanity’s service. And may they live by following His example of love, generosity, and commitment with enthusiasm and a willingness to take part in the activities of the Church by offering their contributions of love and devotion.

Ministerios Catequéticos en Movimiento: Santa María, Sanger

Hace unas dos semanas me invitaron a la parroquia de Santa Maria en Sanger para compartir una plática con monaguillos. Quería agradecer al P. Javier Flores y a Leonel y Magda Valdovinos por la invitación, la organización del evento y su cálida hospitalidad. Y, por supuesto, el resto del personal parroquial y los voluntarios que participaron junto con los niños y jóvenes que asistieron.

Cuando Leonel y Magda compartieron conmigo por primera vez con la posibilidad de compartir este tipo de platica, estaba muy intrigado sobre cuál podría ser la posibilidad de cómo abordarlo. Aunque tengo experiencia en la capacitación de servidores del altar adultos y jóvenes, nunca había compuesto algo específico para monaguillos que abordara los desafíos potenciales que los jóvenes y los niños podrían enfrentar a través de situaciones sociales o culturales. Por lo tanto, al componer mis temas, tomé en consideración, por supuesto, la orientación práctica al servicio de este ministerio y los elementos litúrgicos, pero también quería incluir el aspecto vocacional de este ministerio y cómo, como jóvenes y niños, pueden comenzar no solo a responder a la llamada del Señor incluso a una edad temprana, sino también a poder comenzar a discernir y posiblemente descubrir sus vocaciones.

Incluso como niños y jóvenes, el Señor nos llama a servir. Servir a Dios como monaguillo es una manera maravillosa para que los jóvenes y los niños crezcan en la fe, así como en la responsabilidad, la amistad y otras virtudes. La fe se transmite al pasar tiempo en compañía de Dios y en su servicio a través de pequeñas acciones diarias. Muchos factores juegan un papel, pero hay una actividad preciosa que está al alcance de todos los niños y jóvenes, y que combina estos aspectos, a través del ministerio de los monaguillos.

El hecho es que no hay nada más satisfactorio para nuestra alma, incluso para la de los niños y jóvenes, que servir sin esperar nada a cambio. Y nuestra alegría crece aún más cuando se trata de servir a Dios mismo en el altar. Ser monaguillo tiene el potencial de enseñar a jóvenes y niños el orden de la liturgia y su cuidado e importancia. Pueden aprender a servir con amor y a realizar los detalles más pequeños maravillosamente. Este ministerio también puede enseñarles cómo ser responsables y puntuales. Desde una edad temprana, pueden obtener un buen sentido de servicio y compromiso con la Santa Misa. Ser monaguillo tiene el potencial de fomentar el compañerismo junto con otros de su misma edad o similar y de compartir y distribuir tareas y enseñar y aprender unos de otros. Y, por supuesto, debido a una participación más directa en la Santa Misa, mejorar la posibilidad de crecer en oración, participación y dedicación espiritual y amar para venerar y alabar a Dios más plenamente.

La meta de todo lo que enseñemos a los monaguillos jóvenes siempre debe ser que servir en el Santuario de la casa del Señor es un gran privilegio religioso. Instruirlos sobre el modo de observar los ritos y ceremonias de la Iglesia según la liturgia y alentarlos a comprender el significado y el propósito de la vocación del ministerio en el que participan y el servicio que ofrecen a la comunidad de los fieles. Abrazar su servicio a través del amor y la devoción. Abrazar y superar los desafíos que se pueden enfrentar a través de problemas sociales y obstáculos personales con la ayuda de la gracia de Dios y en la fe.

Que nuestros monaguillos jóvenes sigan el ejemplo de Jesús, que no dudó en ponerse al servicio de toda la humanidad. Y que vivan siguiendo su ejemplo de amor, generosidad y compromiso con entusiasmo y disposición a participar en las actividades de la Iglesia ofreciendo sus contribuciones de amor y devoción.
