The Catechetical Corner: May is the Month of Mary (Also Available in ESP)

In the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, we learned that the angel Gabriel came to Mary and announced that she was to be the mother of Jesus.

Greeting her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” Troubled by this greeting, Mary did not know what to make of it. Gabriel assured her of God’s love for her and told her, “…you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.”

The angel informed her how the Holy Spirit would come to her and, to help her to understand the power of God. Mary’s response to Gabriel’s words were, “…I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

Among many women why was Mary chosen to be the mother of Jesus? This is because Mary was humble and compliant to the will of God. Mary did not say I will not submit to the will of God because I have my own will for myself, Mary humbly said yes.

Mary did one simple thing. She listened to God’s will—that she was to be the mother of Jesus—and she accepted God’s will.

The Lord always chooses and uses the humble and the compliant for the realization of His plans in this world. Simply put Mary humbly submitted her own humanity to the wisdom of our all-knowing God. Like Mary do we always submit to the wisdom of God? Or we only submit when it favors us? And when it does not favor us, do we decline God’s wisdom and submit to our own will?

In this month of May and throughout our ministry, let us continue to reflect upon the Blessed Mother’s humility and compliance to the plan and will of God. God’s wisdom is always for our own betterment. We may initially see it as something that is very hard to follow because we would be pulled out from our own comfort zones or from our own sinful zones. But in the end, we will realize that the plan of God is always correct, and it is always for our own good.

 

El Rincón Catequético: Mayo es el Mes de María

En los Evangelios de Mateo y Lucas, aprendimos que el ángel Gabriel vino a María y anunció que ella iba a ser la madre de Jesús.

Al saludarla, dijo: "¡Salve, favorecida! El Señor está contigo". Preocupada por este saludo, María no sabía qué hacer con él. Gabriel le aseguró el amor de Dios por ella y le dijo: "... concebirás en tu vientre y darás a luz un hijo, y lo llamarás Jesús".

El ángel le informó cómo el Espíritu Santo vendría a ella y, para ayudarla a entender el poder de Dios. La respuesta de María a las palabras de Gabriel fue: "... Soy la esclava del Señor. Que se me haga de acuerdo con tu palabra".

Entre muchas mujeres, ¿por qué María fue elegida para ser la madre de Jesús? Esto se debe a que María era humilde y obediente a la voluntad de Dios. María no dijo que no me sometería a la voluntad de Dios porque tengo mi propia voluntad para mí, María humildemente dijo que sí.

María hizo una cosa simple. Ella escuchó la voluntad de Dios, que ella iba a ser la madre de Jesús, y aceptó la voluntad de Dios.

El Señor siempre elige y usa a los humildes y a los obedientes para la realización de Sus planes en este mundo. En pocas palabras, María humildemente sometió su propia humanidad a la sabiduría de nuestro Dios omnisciente. Como María, ¿siempre nos sometemos a la sabiduría de Dios? ¿O solo nos sometemos cuando nos favorece? Y cuando no nos favorece, ¿declinamos la sabiduría de Dios y nos sometemos a nuestra propia voluntad?

En este mes de mayo y a lo largo de nuestro ministerio, continuemos reflexionando sobre la humildad y el cumplimiento de la Santísima Madre al plan y la voluntad de Dios. La sabiduría de Dios es siempre para nuestro propio mejoramiento. Inicialmente podemos verlo como algo que es muy difícil de seguir porque seríamos sacados de nuestras propias zonas de comodidad o de nuestras propias zonas pecaminosas. Pero al final, nos daremos cuenta de que el plan de Dios siempre es correcto, y siempre es para nuestro propio bien.
