The Catechetical Corner: The Spirituality of Holy Week (ENG/ESP)

Holy Week is nearly upon us. It is a time to devote oneself to prayer and reflection on how Jesus Christ decides to take our place and receive punishment to free us from sin. In addition, Holy Week is the ideal time for us to meditte on our actions and the changes we must make to get closer to God and fulfill His commandments. A time to nurture and rejuvenate our spirituality as we renew our commitment to Christ in the coming celebration of Easter Sunday.

Holy Week is the center of our spirituality because it precisely celebrates the paschal mystery of Christ, his saving passion, death, and resurrection. Our faith would be meaningless, as St. Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 15-16, without the resurrection of Christ. It is worthwhile, then, to stop and analyze how our spirituality is and should be at this time and take advantage of what is offered to us.

A liturgical spirituality. The Church, mother, and teacher, nourishes our spirit and guides our faith through liturgical celebrations to make us understand and live the mystery of Christ.

A biblical spirituality. Nourished and centered on the Word of God, wisely and piously offered to the believer in the readings.

A Christocentric spirituality. That is, centered on Christ, his person, his message, and his exemplary attitude for the us which can illuminate our life.

A spirituality of joy. The definitive and unspeakable joy of victory over death and the encounter with the Risen One.

A spirituality of love. The new commandment of Jesus, celebrated in every Eucharist and translated into the celebration of the Lord's Supper because love is humility, fraternity, service, solidarity, and communion.

A spirituality of the Cross. The cross of which we venerate on Good Friday to discover in it the mystery of God's love revealed by Jesus Christ and his dedication unto death.

A spirituality of hope. Since our life, like that of Jesus, is in the hands of the Father. And neither pain, nor evil, nor death have the last word.

And finally, a spirituality of faith and life. Because faith is not had, it is lived. And we live in Christ living and risen, in an encounter with Him who, from Baptism, marks our life and transforms it.

Life, encounter, personal relationship with the Risen One and others, that is our spirituality, which isn’t simply based on a series of doctrines, norms, and rites, it is a way of living, of being one with our Savior. My brothers and sisters in Christ commit yourselves to love and service and give your life as our savior did and as He would for you today. And may our spirituality be full of renewed love and devotion in the coming celebration of our Lord’s resurrection.

El Rincón Catequético: La Espiritualidad de la Semana Santa

La Semana Santa está casi sobre nosotros. Es un tiempo para dedicarse a la oración y la reflexión sobre cómo Jesucristo decide tomar nuestro lugar y recibir castigo para liberarnos del pecado. Además, la Semana Santa es el momento ideal para que meditemos sobre nuestras acciones y los cambios que debemos hacer para acercarnos a Dios y cumplir Sus mandamientos. Un tiempo para nutrir y rejuvenecer nuestra espiritualidad a medida que renovamos nuestro compromiso con Cristo en la venida celebración el Domingo de Pascua.

La Semana Santa es el centro de nuestra espiritualidad porque celebra precisamente el misterio pascual de Cristo, su pasión salvífica, muerte y resurrección. Nuestra fe no tendría sentido, como San Pablo nos recuerda en 1 Corintios 15-16, sin la resurrección de Cristo. Vale la pena, entonces, tomar una pausa y analizar cómo es y debe ser nuestra espiritualidad en este momento y aprovechar de lo que se nos ofrece.

Una espiritualidad litúrgica. La Iglesia, madre y maestra, alimenta nuestro espíritu y guía nuestra fe a través de las celebraciones litúrgicas para hacernos comprender y vivir el misterio de Cristo.

Una espiritualidad bíblica. Alimentada y centrada en la Palabra de Dios, sabia y piadosamente ofrecida al creyente en las lecturas.

Una espiritualidad Cristocéntrica. Es decir, centrada en Cristo, su persona, su mensaje y su actitud ejemplar para nosotros que puede iluminar nuestra vida.

Una espiritualidad de alegría. La alegría definitiva e indecible de la victoria sobre la muerte y el encuentro con el Resucitado.

Una espiritualidad de amor. El mandamiento nuevo de Jesús, celebrado en cada Eucaristía y traducido en la celebración de la Cena del Señor porque el amor es humildad, fraternidad, servicio, solidaridad y comunión.

Una espiritualidad de la Cruz. La cruz de la que veneramos el Viernes Santo para descubrir en ella el misterio del amor de Dios revelado por Jesucristo y su entrega hasta la muerte.

Una espiritualidad de esperanza. Ya que nuestra vida, como la de Jesús, está en las manos del Padre. Y ni el dolor, ni el mal, ni la muerte tienen la última palabra.

Y finalmente, una espiritualidad de fe y vida. Porque la fe no se tiene, se vive. Y vivimos en Cristo vivo y resucitado, en un encuentro con Aquel que, desde el Bautismo, marca nuestra vida y la transforma.

La vida, el encuentro, la relación personal con el Resucitado y con los demás, esa es nuestra espiritualidad, que no se basa simplemente en una serie de doctrinas, normas y ritos, es una forma de vivir, de ser uno con nuestro Salvador. Mis hermanos y hermanas en Cristo comprométanse a amar y servir y a dar sus vidas como lo hizo nuestro Salvador y como Él lo haría por ustedes hoy. Y que nuestra espiritualidad esté llena de amor renovado y devoción en la celebración que pronto está por llegar de la resurrección de nuestro Señor.
