After taking into account recommendations made by the Health Care Departments from throughout the San Joaquin Valley and directives received in Governor Newsom’s Executive Order N-25-20, I, Joseph V. Brennan, Bishop of the Diocese of Fresno issue this Decree.
In light of the current situation, all Roman Catholics in the Diocese of Fresno are hereby dispensed from the obligation of Sunday Mass attendance. This dispensation will go into effect immediately and will remain in effect until such time as it is deemed prudent to rescind it. Again, all Catholics may avail themselves of this dispensation but I especially encourage persons falling into the categories of greater risk to do so.
Be advised that more directives regarding our current response to this situation will be forthcoming from the Diocese. Please share this information with your parishioners in every way that you can and as soon as you can.
May we continue to observe the precautions prescribed by our public health departments in the Diocese to protect ourselves and our brothers and sisters.
Do pray for the repose of the souls of those who have died from this illness, for the healing of those who are ill, for the protection of all our health care workers and for all the home-based caregivers. We continue to hope and pray that our medical professionals will be able to find a cure to this illness.
Most Rev. Joseph V. Brennan, D.D.
Bishop of the Diocese of Fresno
